Heitor was awarded student of the week for persevering in the Engineers Week construction challenge and being the first in the class to succeed in the weight challenge. Everyone had to build structures (cube, triangle-based pyramid and square-based pyramid) out of cocktail sticks and blue tac. He worked really hard and focussed on the task at hand. We have seen a real improvement in his spelling and reading too. Maith thú Heitor!
We were lucky enough to have real engineers visit our classroom today. They came from Blanchardstown IT and told us about the exciting projects they're working on. They said we had some brilliant ideas and they can see there are budding scientists and engineers in our school. We worked in groups to do engineering activities directed by them. It was great fun! We had such a fun morning today in the Lime class. Dale paid us a visit and brought us on a walk all around Tyrrelstown House garden with the lovely owner Mark, where we learned lots about trees and had a chance to see many different types. Here's a list of the trees we saw:
The children in Lime Class are performing Snow White as Gaeilge next Wednesday in the Seachtain na Gaeilge show. We're doing lots of practising in class and would greatly appreciate any of the following items that could be borrowed for the show:
As part of our Engineering week activities, we looked at this animation to get us thinking about how the world around us is made and where design fits in. The film can be viewed here. Please watch this at home and chat to your family about it.
This section of the website is useful for reflecting on the film and asking questions relating to our own lives on topics such as home, community, information, spaces, objects, experiences, technology and communications with a list of the types of jobs in that area. We will be chatting about this briefly in class but it would be great to chat to your family about it at home and share your ideas with the class the next day in school. We did a construction challenge in the classroom today. Every child made a cube, a triangle-based pyramid and a square based pyramid, each using cocktail sticks and blue tac. They had to try and make them as strong as they could, then choose which one they thought was strongest to withstand the weight of a box of crayons. Many constructions managed to succeed in the challenge and hold up the crayon box....even if it was for only a few minutes! We celebrated book week this week and the children enjoyed lots of D.E.A.R time where we 'Drop Everything and Read'. The children talked about their favourite books and authors and some even dressed up as their favourite characters from a story. We showed off our costumes in the school parade on World Book Day.
The children did fantastic work on their book reviews and we put them up on display in the classroom for everyone to see. Each of the children created a butterfly with their favourite book title and author written on it and added it to the fantastic display in the main entrance of the school. Some of the children entered the poster competition too, winners will be announced next week. Well done Lime Class! We made our very own pancake batter from scratch today in the Lime Class and did procedural writing on the steps that we took. We measured the ingredients out on the weighing scales which tied in with our topic of the week in Maths- weight. In the afternoon we invited Stephen's class in to join us and we made pancakes in the frying pan on the hotplate. We did lots of pancake flipping and it was lots of fun! Everyone had a chance to eat some of the pancakes with a little lemon juice and sugar, yum! We were lucky to have a visit today from a fantastic storyteller in school. Fiona entertained the children with riddles and stories. She even let us have a go on her cool instrument from Zimbabwe. It was lots of fun! We performed in senior assembly today and told everyone about what we've been learning on the Ancient Egyptians. The children had learned an 8 verse poem which they recited brilliantly. They wore their art creations too- Egyptian jewellery they made in our Art lesson this week. These included gold torcs, necklaces, bracelets, headbands and crowns. We decorated them with geometric designs and jewels. It was a great chance to show them off! Well done Lime Class. |
